Using [H2] for evaluation of active redox processes
- H2 is an important intermediate in the degradation of organic matter, with high turn-over rate and is also produced from geochemical sources:
- H2 can be oxidized by oxidative microorganisms like methanogens, sulfate-reducers and iron-reducers:
- Occurrence of Terminal Electron Accepting Processes (TEAPs) can be evaluated performing thermodynamic calculations:
- A TEAP will only occur when the Gibbs free energy for the reaction is below a minimum threshold value (-7 to -20 kJ/mol H2)
